The Cuban Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz, called for generating more revenue in tourism, while the economic and social crisis in Cuba has led to an unprecedented collapse in the sector.

According to a report by the Cuban News Agency (ACN) this Saturday, the statements were made during a meeting with tourism workers in light of the upcoming day for that sector, to be celebrated on March fourth.

The ACN reported that the Cuban official also urged to generate "solutions through innovation", in line with the official rhetoric used by Miguel Díaz-Canel, who has coined the phrase "resist with creativity" to call for "alternatives" to the crisis caused by the regime's poor management.

"Taking an inward look to perfect and generate more income" is Marrero's solution to reactivate the tourism sector, which has not managed to recover pre-pandemic levels.

On his part, Juan Carlos García Granda, the Minister of Tourism (MINTUR), urged the participants in the meeting to "contribute ideas that help strengthen the engine of the economy."

The lack of investment and maintenance has left many hotels in a deplorable state, especially in Varadero, where hotel occupancy remains at minimal levels.

Marrero himself, during the annual review of the Ministry of Tourism in 2024, which was attended by senior government and parliamentary officials, emphasized the urgency of obtaining foreign currency.

He also emphasized the need for joint efforts among all sectors to restore tourism to its role as the "engine of the Cuban economy."

Despite official efforts, the data shows a recovery that is still insufficient.

In 2024, Cuba received 2,203,117 visitors, just 71% of the expected total and 90.4% of the figure achieved in 2023.

In this context, the regime attributes the difficulties to the "escalation of the blockade" by the United States, Cuba's continued presence on the list of state sponsors of terrorism, and the "media war" against the island.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Tourism Crisis in Cuba and the Country's Economy

What is the current situation of tourism in Cuba?

Tourism in Cuba is declining due to financial issues, a lack of supplies, loss of skilled personnel, and sanctions from the United States. Additionally, the perception of insecurity and the economic crisis exacerbate the situation, leaving the tourism sector in a critical position.

How is the tourism crisis affecting the Cuban economy?

The tourism crisis is deeply affecting the Cuban economy, as tourism has been one of the main sources of foreign currency income for the country. The decline in the number of visitors has led to a significant reduction in revenues generated by the sector, exacerbating the already fragile economic situation of the island.

Why does the Cuban government insist on boosting tourism despite the crisis?

The Cuban government views tourism as a "locomotive of the economy" and aims to obtain foreign currency through this sector. However, the lack of a clear and effective strategy has hindered the recovery of the sector, and investments in hotel infrastructure have not produced the expected impact due to insufficient demand.

What measures is the Cuban government taking to address the tourism crisis?

The Cuban government has attempted to diversify its tourism offerings, focusing on nature, cultural and historical tourism, as well as health tourism, in addition to the traditional sun and beach tourism. However, the lack of a clear and effective strategy has hindered the recovery of the sector, and investments in hotel infrastructure have not generated the expected impact due to the lack of demand.
