Ovi or Bebeshito? Yomil shares his opinion on which Cuban reggaeton artist represents Cuba the best

Yomil Hidalgo believes that Bebeshito better represents Cuban reguetón than Ovi, who has gained fame in Mexico and the U.S. but lacks strong roots in Cuba. His words reignite the debate about Cuban musical identity.

The Cuban reggaeton artist Yomil Hidalgo Puentes has sparked debate after sharing his opinion on which artist in the urban genre has elevated the name of Cuba the most.

During an interview with La Familia Cubana, the artist was asked who, between Ovi and Oniel Bebeshito, better represents the essence of Cuban reggaeton.

"They are completely different things, Bebeshito represents Cuba, but Ovi does not represent Cuba. Ovi made a name for himself in Mexico by embracing Mexican culture. That credit must be given. But Ovi doesn't hold concerts. It's true that he had a lot of exposure and managed himself very well, but to claim you are Cuba, you have to be fully Cuban. There's no point in saying you are Cuba when not many people know you in Cuba, and in that respect, I believe Bebeshito is doing much more," stated Yomil.

His statements have sparked debate among fans of the Cuban urban genre. While some agree with the reggaeton artist's perspective, arguing that Bebeshito has developed his career with a stronger connection to the island, others defend Ovi's international impact, highlighting his collaborations with renowned artists and his presence in the Latin music scene.

Ovi, who has gained recognition in countries like Mexico and the United States, has sometimes been criticized for not directly representing the essence of Cuban reggaeton, while Bebeshito has maintained a closer connection with the island's urban music and its audience.

Yomil's words reignite the debate about musical identity and the representation of Cuba in the urban genre, a space where more and more artists are emerging with innovative proposals and diverse styles.
