Tension among immigrants in the U.S.: Influencer confronts Cuban over criticisms of Mexicans

Influencer Carlos Eduardo Espina confronts a Cuban over derogatory comments about Mexicans in the U.S., highlighting internal tensions within the Hispanic community and the importance of unity.

The immigrant community in the United States has been the scene of a new controversy following the clash on social media between influencer Carlos Eduardo Espina and a Cuban citizen who made derogatory comments about Mexicans.

The incident went viral on social media when Espina, a social communicator and migration activist, confronted the Cuban after his comparative statements about both immigrant communities.

In his comments, the Cuban argued that Cubans have a greater capacity for progress compared to Mexicans, whom he accused of envying their success in the United States.

Do you know what the difference is between a Cuban and a Mexican? A Cuban was born to succeed, while a Mexican was born to see how a Cuban succeeds,” said the Cuban in statements that lacked solid backing.

In addition, he emphasized that his community has been able to take advantage of the country's benefits to strengthen itself economically, in contrast to Mexicans, whom he deemed less prosperous.

“Do you know what your pain is? Living in the garden of the largest country in the world, which is the United States, you are nobody, and we, the Cubans coming from a Third World country mired in poverty like Cuba, arrive in this country”… “We are superior to you, who live in a Second World country,” he continued his discourse.

He also pointed out to Mexicans that “you fill your mouth to criticize Cubans, because your pain, this wonderful country offers us the benefits of legalizing ourselves, of working as dignified people. That is why we have been able to take advantage of those opportunities.

In response to these statements, the influencer reacted with indignation and stated that Mexicans not only do not feel envy towards Cubans, but are also deeply proud of their identity and culture.

Espina, who was born in Montevideo but has lived in Texas since he was five years old and is a well-known activist for immigrant rights, defended the effort and work ethic of Mexican immigrants in the United States, emphasizing that, despite the challenges and the lack of certain benefits that have favored Cubans, they have managed to excel and contribute significantly to the country:

"First, my friend, as that song says, tell the one who is informing you that they are misinforming you, because I don't know who told you that Mexicans envy Cubans, because that simply isn't true, and this is not meant to disrespect Cubans. But I tell you that I have never in my life met a Mexican who says they wish to be Cuban, who would like to be Cuban, and as I said, this is not against Cuba, but the reality is that Mexico is one of the largest, most beautiful countries in the world, and of course, it has its problems like any other country, but in the end, all Mexicans are proud to be Mexican. This leads me to my second point: you must be very out of touch to think that Mexicans here in the United States don't know how to progress, because even Americans will tell you that Mexicans are some of the most hardworking, honest, and resilient people in the world, and that’s why Mexicans, without having the same benefits and assistance..." he said.

The exchange reflected tensions within the Hispanic community, where differences in background and the opportunities afforded to various migrant groups can be a source of friction.

However, it also highlights the need to strengthen solidarity and mutual respect among Latinos in the United States, rather than fueling divisions that impact the public perception of the migrant community.

The fact has sparked intense debate on social media, where some users have supported the influencer and highlighted the importance of unity among migrant communities, particularly among Mexicans who have utilized the comments section to express various opinions.

This confrontation has sparked a recurring debate on social media regarding the perception of Cuban immigrants in the United States. In recent months, divided opinions have emerged about whether Cubans are truly more successful than other Latino groups or if this view stems from stereotypes and migration privileges.

In September 2023, a similar controversy went viral when Espina himself stated that "many Latinos do not want Cubans in the United States."

Recently, a Mexican residing in the United States sparked controversy after criticizing Cubans who voted for Donald Trump in the last presidential elections.

In a video that quickly went viral, Edán Méndez expressed his discontent with the attitude of some members of the Cuban community in the United States, particularly those who arrived in the country in the 1980s and 1990s.
