Major League Soccer (MLS) has imposed a new restriction that keeps Yassine Cheuko, the personal bodyguard of Lionel Messi, off the field, who until now had accompanied him on the sidelines at every Inter Miami match.
Cheuko, a former military personnel and martial arts expert, has been a constant presence since the Argentine star's arrival in the United States. However, the league has decided to prohibit his presence on the sidelines during matches, a measure that, according to the bodyguard himself, puts the player's safety at risk.
"In 20 months in the United States, 16 people have entered the field looking for Leo. In Europe, over seven years, there were only six," explained Cheuko in an interview with House of Highlights. The security agent insists that his presence has been crucial in preventing major incidents, especially in an environment where the excitement for Messi continues to grow.
Although he respects the decision of MLS, he regrets that a middle ground could not be found: “I love MLS and Concacaf, but we need to work together. I love to help. I’m not better than anyone, but I have experience in Europe,” he stated.
For now, Yassine will have to settle for watching from the stands, while remaining steadfast in his purpose: to protect Leo Messi, both on and off the field.
