Ahmonique Miller, a 28-year-old mother from Las Vegas, died in a post-operative recovery house in Miami after undergoing cosmetic surgery at Avana Plastic Surgery. The young woman had traveled with her younger sister, Kiera Barnes, 19, to have a cosmetic procedure that included liposuction and a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL).

Both sisters documented their trip on social media before the procedure, which took place on March 6. The following day, on the night of March 7, police and fire teams responded to the house known as Keyla’s Recovery House, located at 3637 SW 4th Street in Miami, where they found Ahmonique unresponsive, face down on a bed.

According to the victim's mother, Wakeelah Miller, her daughter and her sister each paid $1,500 for a six-night stay at that house. Wakeelah stated that, according to Kiera's testimony, Ahmonique was given a muscle relaxer and possibly multiple Percocets before going to sleep, but she never woke up, according to information gathered by outlets such as Telemundo 51 and NBC6.

The case is being investigated by the homicide unit of the Miami Police Department. The autopsy and toxicology reports are still pending, and so far, no medication has been officially linked to the cause of death, a spokesperson confirmed to local media.

Ahmonique was the mother of a one-year-old girl, ran two small businesses in Las Vegas, and had aspirations as a music artist, according to her mother, who criticized the lack of regulation regarding these centers.

On her part, the family's lawyer, Jahra McLawrence, reported the lack of emergency response from the facility staff and demanded justice: “Recovering after a surgery should not equate to a death sentence,” she told Local 10 News.

The owner of the establishment, Keyla Oliver, has not responded to requests for comments. The Avana clinic, where the surgical procedure took place, had also not issued public statements at the time the cited reports were published.
