In the heart of the Everglades, hidden among swamps and wild vegetation, lies a colossus of the American space past: the largest solid fuel rocket engine ever built.
This relic, forgotten by the official history of NASA, still remains in its concrete silo, serving as a silent witness to an era of ambition and technological race. A video shared on the Instagram profile lifestyle_miami showcased stunning images of the site, captured by urban explorers aware of this surprising story from the "Cold War" period.
"In the depths of Florida's Everglades, you will find the largest solid-fuel rocket engine ever built in this vast abandoned NASA facility. The rocket was constructed in the 1960s during the race to send humans into space. NASA abandoned the project in 1969, leaving the rocket behind," the site stated in its post.
During the 1960s, amidst the excitement of the Apollo program, the company Aerojet-General received funding to design the AJ260 rocket, a massive machine capable of generating up to 2.6 million kilograms of thrust, according to Wikipedia.
The tests were conducted between 1965 and 1967 at a specially constructed facility near Homestead, Florida. The roar of the rocket could be heard for miles, and its flames were visible from Miami.
But in 1969, NASA discarded solid fuel engines in favor of liquid ones for its Saturn V. The plant was abandoned, the project was canceled, and the gigantic rocket was left behind, trapped in a 55-meter hole, now covered by concrete slabs.
Decades later, the abandoned factory has been rediscovered by urban explorers and documentarians. @epicairboattours, a popular social media account, recently visited the site, sharing stunning images of the facility covered in overgrowth and rust, yet still showing visible signs of its glorious past.
Although the land has been designated a nature reserve, the structure remains standing, defying time and oblivion.
