A young Cuban won a gold medal at the X Open Water Swimming Championships of the Dominican Republic 2025, which concludes this Sunday.

The athlete from Villa Clara Laurent Estrada excelled in the 50-meter freestyle event, finishing with a time of 26.95 seconds, as reported by the station La Reina Radial del Centro.

Estrada also won silver in the 100 meters backstroke, while Vladimir Hernández took gold in the 400 meters freestyle.

Despite attending the sporting event with the flu, the swimmer from Villa Clara managed a time of 1:04.74 minutes in the backstroke. In the same category, but for 50 meters, she also won silver on Friday.

"I haven't been feeling completely well in recent days due to a respiratory illness that kept me with a fever for three days and forced me to step away from training and daily activities," said the 21-year-old Cuban.

At the three medals of Estrada and the record of Vladimir Hernández add the results of the Havana-born Yadiel Estrada, who once again stood out among the younger members of the group representing Cuba.

In the competition, he won his second gold medal among the 15-16 age group.

"I am very pleased with Vladimir's results, as well as Yadiel's, who is attending his second international competition after debuting in the school games in Venezuela last year. I expect much more from them in the two remaining days," said Mirta Díaz, their coach.

At a time when Cuban sports is experiencing a serious crisis, the leader of swimming in Cuba, Elisbet Gámez, announced last year that she would be taking a break from the pools for a while.

He said that he would take a break, but "it doesn't mean that this is my end, I hope to return stronger and more eager to fight for the Santo Domingo 2026 Games."

He explained that his decision was based on his recent failures, including having been disqualified from the 2024 Olympic Games; and that he had been overwhelmed with "feelings of sadness, anxiety, and hopelessness, and a lack of confidence in the process."

The lack of proper infrastructure and opportunities has led many athletes to leave the country in search of better conditions to develop their careers. This situation is reflected in the decline of sports results and the increasing trend of defections during international competitions.
