The Havana public transportation system faced another setback this Wednesday with the complete suspension of the popular "Gazelles" (MetroTaxis) service, due to an inability to obtain fuel.

"Unfortunately, our beloved Gazelles were unable to refuel last night, April 23, which means that today, April 24, we will not be able to offer our usual service," confirmed the entity Transportación Habana (TH) in an official statement released on social media.

The suspension leaves thousands of users without one of the few affordable and fast options to get around the city. Although it was announced that alternative means could be made available on certain routes, the company did not provide details or guarantees.

The announcement comes amidst a deep energy crisis that is shaking the entire country.

According to official reports, the National Electric System (SEN) recorded a record deficit of electrical generation of 1,901 megawatts (MW) last night during peak hours at 8:10 p.m., marking the highest level in recent years.

The Electric Union (UNE) attributed the collapse to a combination of fuel limitations, multiple breakdowns, and scheduled maintenance at thermal power plants, exacerbated by a lack of investment in energy infrastructure.

The official journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso explained that one of the main affected parties was the Melones truck, essential for distributed generation. The situation has led to blackouts of up to 20 hours a day in several provinces of the country, causing an increasing social discontent.

In the meantime, the government's attempt to promote solar energy has not been sufficient to offset the decline of the traditional electrical system: the new photovoltaic plants generated only 1,064 MWh, a figure inadequate against national demand.

On social media, the suspension of MetroTaxis was met with frustration, criticism, and also sarcasm. "And now how do we get to work?" wrote one user on Facebook. Another joked, "There's no gas for the Gazelles, but there’s surely enough for the May 1st parades."
