A couple dies after a large fire at their home in Miami Gardens

The cause is still under investigation, and the family is seeking answers.

A couple identified as Rhonda Spencer, 65, and her husband Timothy Fordham, died early Wednesday morning after a devastating fire at their home located in the area of Northwest 185 Terrace and 20th Avenue, in the northwest part of Miami Gardens, near the Hard Rock Stadium.

According to local media reports, the flames completely consumed the house after neighbors and a resident heard a loud explosion. Tamonjamin Williams, the nephew of the victims, who was also in the house, recounted that he woke up to the noise and that when he tried to escape, the ceiling of his room collapsed. He claims he managed to exit through the door after considering jumping out of a window.

The fire was reported around 3:34 a.m., and upon arrival, Miami-Dade firefighters found the house fully engulfed in flames. Emergency teams initiated an operation due to the partial collapse of the structure and worked to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby homes. Several people were evacuated, and some neighbors attempted to contain the flames from their yards.

Aerial images captured by local media show that the house was reduced to rubble, with only a few exterior walls remaining standing.

Initially, a possible gas explosion was investigated as the cause of the incident. However, Florida City Gas confirmed that the house and the nearby residences were not connected to the natural gas service, nor were there reports of active leaks in the area.

Relatives demand answers

The tragedy has left the family in mourning, as they still do not understand what happened. Rhonda Spencer worked as a supervisor at the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department and was active in her church. “She was a wonderful person, a Christian woman, hardworking and very much loved,” said her sister Jamie Spencer.

Another sister, Marcella, expressed that the loss is doubly painful, as the family had recently buried one of Spencer's sons. "It's overwhelming. I always admired her; she was a strong and exemplary sister," she added.

Timothy Fordham's brother, Marvin Jones, stated: “I am devastated. There are no words to describe how I feel.”

Relatives demand access to the security footage that could clarify the causes of the fire. The investigation is being handled by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
