The video in which neighbors capture and restrain a thief until the arrival of a police patrol in Bayamo was recently shared.
“Just moments ago in La Unión, Bayamo. Presumably, he was caught... rob... With that same energy, they should confront the dictatorship, the worst thief of all, who is robbing them daily,” wrote on Facebook the Miami-based singer-songwriter Saúl Manuel, who shared the document.
In the video, the conversation between the neighbors can be heard. "If they caught him peacefully, why did they hit him?" one says. "Don't hit him anymore," another pleads.
The thief remains silent, someone off-camera holds the rope that ties his hands, and some signs of bruises can be seen on his face.
The video also shows the arrival of the patrol that takes him away and how apparently a man tries to hit the individual as he gets into the patrol and before it drives off.
The increasing deterioration of public order and the worsening social crisis in Cuba has made images of this nature, where the population attempts to take justice into their own hands, more common than ever.
At the beginning of this month, in Santiago de Cuba, an alleged thief was caught inside a home by the residents, who managed to apprehend him on their own.
Frequently Asked Questions About Crime in Cuba and Civic Justice
Why did the neighbors of Bayamo decide to capture and tie up the alleged thief?
The residents of Bayamo took justice into their own hands due to the deterioration of public order and police inefficiency. The rising insecurity and the lack of effective response from the authorities have led citizens to act on their own to protect their communities against the wave of crime.
Is it common in Cuba for neighbors to stop thieves?
Recently, it has become increasingly common for Cuban citizens to apprehend thieves caught in the act. La falta de acción policial efectiva y la creciente delincuencia han impulsado a los vecinos a tomar medidas por su cuenta, a menudo reteniendo a los sospechosos hasta la llegada de las autoridades.
What risks are involved when citizens act as judges and enforcers in Cuba?
The fact that citizens act as judges and executors carries risks of violence and possible violations of human rights. Vigilante justice can lead to dangerous situations for both criminals and citizens, as it lacks the due legal process and the guarantees of a formal judicial system.
How has the social crisis in Cuba influenced the rise in crime?
The social crisis in Cuba has contributed to the rise in crime due to a lack of opportunities and economic instability. La desesperación y el descontento social han llevado a un incremento en los delitos, mientras que la ineficiencia estatal para abordarlos ha empeorado la situación, generando un ambiente de inseguridad constante.
