Two drivers from Ómnibus Nacionales avert tragedy on the Las Tunas-Havana route

Two drivers prevented a bus from overturning due to a failure on the Las Tunas-La Habana route. Despite fewer accidents in April, fatalities increased, reflecting issues with road infrastructure.

Two bus drivers from the National Bus Company prevented a tragedy early this Sunday morning by stopping the vehicle from overturning.

A report from the company itself recounted the incident and specified that early on Sunday morning, bus 1694, which was servicing the Las Tunas-Havana route, experienced a technical malfunction in a front tire, but the swift actions of the driver and the co-driver prevented an accident.

The incident occurred at kilometer 80 of the National Highway. The bus had departed at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday from Las Tunas, and more than six hours later, they saw the front tire fail.

The crew of the bus, consisting of Rafael Bello Acosta and Rolando Rodríguez Peña, performed a maneuver to prevent the bus from overturning.

The director of the transport company in Tunera, Alexander Torres, told the press that the protocol for transferring travelers was activated immediately to continue their transportation to Havana.

According to the authorities, the vehicle underwent the necessary technical inspection before departing, and no damages were detected.

In a context where accidents frequently come to light, there were fewer incidents in April compared to the same month last year, but the number of fatalities increased.

The official media outlet Granma reported that by the end of April, there were 2,377 traffic accidents, a decrease of 150 incidents compared to April 2024.

However, the incidents were more deadly: deaths increased, despite a decrease in the number of injuries.

According to Colonel Roberto Rodríguez Fernández, head of the Specialized Traffic Body, human factors were involved in 91% of accidents, confirming that the most common causes include lack of attention to vehicle control, disregarding traffic signals, improper overtaking, and not yielding to pedestrians.

However, the deterioration of the vehicle fleet and the condition of the roads have been key factors in the accidents.

Rarely do the authorities acknowledge or thoroughly address the structural issues that lead to accidents, for which the regime offers no solution.
