Miami-Dade opens applications for affordable housing program: How to apply and who qualifies?

In Miami-Dade, this program takes on particular importance in light of the growing housing crisis facing the county.

From this Monday, June 9, until Friday, June 20, low-income residents in Miami-Dade County will be able to enroll in the waiting list for the Project-Based Voucher (PBV) Program, an initiative of the Public Housing and Community Development (PHCD) Department, aimed at facilitating access to affordable housing in participating residential complexes.

What is the PBV program?

The Project-Based Vouchers (PBV) program is a branch of the housing assistance system of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which allocates funds to ensure access to safe and affordable housing.

Unlike portable vouchers (Section 8), which beneficiaries can use in private properties, PBVs are tied to specific units in previously approved developments.

In Miami-Dade, this program takes on special importance due to the growing housing crisis facing the county.

Rent prices continue to rise, and according to recent studies, over 60% of tenants allocate more than 30% of their income to rent, a situation deemed unsustainable.

When and how to apply?

The registration process for the waiting list begins on Monday, June 9, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. and ends on Friday, June 20, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. (Eastern Time).

Applications must be submitted online only, through the official portal: https://miamidadevoucher.myhousing.com

Warning: Paper applications or in-person submissions will not be accepted.

Who qualifies?

The program is designed for low-income families and individuals, and eligibility is determined based on the income limits set by HUD.

Below are the maximum allowable incomes per household:

Additionally, the program gives preferential selection to certain vulnerable groups:

-Homes displaced by government actions.

-People referred by the Trust for the Homeless.

-Veterans.

-Eligible residents of the development.

-Families with the right to reintegration.

-Individuals with special needs or disabilities.

-People with mobility, hearing, or vision issues.

What developments are involved?

More than 30 residential developments in the county are participating in this edition.

Each complex has a limited number of spaces available on its waiting list.

Many of them are designed for specific audiences: older adults, families, individuals with disabilities, or previously homeless people.

Some of the complexes offer units with 1, 2, or 3 bedrooms, depending on the demographic profile and accessibility needs.

To view the updated list of participating developments, you can check directly on the official PHCD site or within the application portal.
