The initiative, already visible on Google Maps, is part of a state law that also pays tribute to three deceased local sheriff’s deputies.

The Palm Beach County commissioners in Florida will vote this Tuesday on a proposal to ceremoniously rename a stretch of road as "President Donald J. Trump Boulevard," right along the route that connects West Palm Beach Airport with Mar-a-Lago, the private residence and club of the U.S. president, reported Associated Press (AP).

The measure, driven by a new state law signed by Governor Ron DeSantis, establishes that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) must install commemorative signs along a four-mile stretch of Southern Boulevard, which has been a regular part of the presidential route during trips to the state.

According to CBS 12, although the formal decision has not yet been made, Google Maps surprised many drivers this Monday by already displaying the new name on its platform, generating mixed reactions among residents.

The name change is ceremonial, meaning that postal addresses and emergency systems will continue to identify the roadway as Southern Boulevard. However, the symbolic impact of the renaming has not gone unnoticed in a key state for U.S. politics, where Trump has a strong support base.

The resolution will be discussed during the session on July 8 and is listed as item 3A-2 on the official agenda. County staff has indicated that they will gather public input before the final installation of the signs, scheduled for September.

The state law HB 987, which supports the measure, also includes honoring three Palm Beach County Sheriff's deputies who died in the line of duty. Thus, another section of the same road will be named “PBSO Motorman Highway,” in memory of Sergeant Luis Páez, Officer Dan Díaz, and Officer Ralph “Butch” Waller, who lost their lives in a tragic accident in 2024.

Southern Boulevard is not just any road in Florida. It is the route of power and spectacle, along which presidential caravans, journalists, protests, and supporters have traveled since Trump settled in Mar-a-Lago. Renaming it, even if only symbolically, reinforces its political and identity value for those who see the president as an icon.

For others, however, it represents a sign of the increasing personalization of American politics, in a context where social polarization and the cult of personality are on the rise.
