The price of the U.S. dollar (USD) remains stable in the Cuban informal market, and this Monday, July 14, it is quoted at 385 Cuban pesos (CUP), according to the daily monitoring by the independent media elTOQUE.
This upward trend reflects the increasing demand for foreign currency on the island, within a context of scarcity, inflation, and a lack of confidence in the Cuban peso as a savings currency.
On its part, the euro (EUR) retains its lead as the most expensive currency in the informal market, reaching 430 CUP today. This figure reinforces the perception that the European currency is a preferred store of value for many Cubans, especially those receiving remittances from countries on the continent. Its limited circulation and high demand in real estate and commercial transactions keep it above the dollar.
Regarding the Freely Convertible Currency (MLC), which is mainly used in state stores, the price is set this Monday at 230 CUP, which is two pesos less than the previous day.
Exchange Rate Evolution
The MLC has been plummeting since June 28, and many people believe it could continue to decrease in value due to the shortages in the state-run stores that operate with this currency.
Its value is lower than that of physical foreign currencies, but the MLC remains essential for accessing basic products and consumer goods in some areas where dollar stores have not yet flourished.
