August is shaping up to be the month of preparation for the return to school, and in this regard, the state of Florida is launching a measure, approved by the Legislature and signed by Governor Ron DeSantis, which represents relief for thousands of families by covering the entire month with a sales tax exemption on school supplies.

This initiative is part of a broader tax package aimed at easing the financial burden on state residents, with a total relief of 2 billion dollars, of which 450 million are specifically allocated to support families during this crucial season.

According to information from Telemundo, throughout August, consumers will be able to purchase a wide variety of products without paying state tax, as long as they adhere to the established price caps, which are for school supplies costing up to $50, including notebooks, pencils, folders, rulers, scissors, backpacks, lunch boxes, among others.

Regarding clothing and footwear for students up to 100 dollars per item, including backpacks, bags, school belts, pants, sweaters, shirts, and shoes.

Also computers and technological equipment up to $1,500 for personal use, such as laptops, monitors, keyboards, mice, e-readers, and more.

Moreover, educational materials and didactic games costing up to 30 dollars, which include flashcards, interactive books, puzzles, and other learning materials.

"By lowering taxes, empowering parents, and boosting our economy, we make it easier for people to live, work, and thrive in the Free State of Florida," DeSantis declared from Panama City Beach on Monday, where he officially announced the measure before parents and educators.

For many Cubans living in Florida, especially those with several children or who share their expenses with family members both on the island and abroad, this measure comes as a long-awaited opportunity.

The high costs of back-to-school can be a significant burden, and a month of tax-free shopping can make a difference when it comes to equipping children with everything they need for a successful school year.

Additionally, there is no limit on the number of exempt items that can be purchased, as long as the individual price does not exceed the allowed cap. This opens up the possibility of stocking up on supplies or equipment, not only for the home but also to send to relatives in Cuba, where these items are scarce or very costly.
