Florida ranks among the worst states in the United States for having a baby, according to a new study that assessed costs, healthcare services, and overall conditions for first-time parents.
In its 2025 edition of the "Best and Worst States to Have a Baby," the analysis by WalletHub — cited by the portal Florida Politics — ranked Florida 44th among the 50 states and Washington D.C.
The report takes into account 31 key indicators, including the average cost of childbirth, the infant mortality rate, the availability of pediatric care, and parental leave policies.
Florida's score was just 37.4, far below the national average.
The report highlights that a conventional childbirth in the U.S. currently costs more than $2,600 for mothers with health insurance, and it can exceed $15,000 without coverage.
“The best state to have a baby is one that reduces costs without sacrificing the quality of medical care, and that offers a supportive environment for families even after the birth,” explained Chip Lupo, analyst at WalletHub.
In the case of Florida, several key indicators showed weaknesses: the state ranked 37th in birth rate and in the number of pediatricians and family doctors per capita.
Its infant mortality rate was ranked 34th, the cited source indicated.
However, the report also acknowledges some positive aspects: Florida ranked 15th in the availability of midwives and obstetricians per capita, 21st in parental leave policies, and 27th in childcare centers per capita.
The director of the Berger Institute for Individual and Social Development, Stacey N. Doan, emphasized that child welfare is directly related to parental care.
"A comprehensive approach is needed that includes family-friendly labor policies, accessible childcare services, and safe and welcoming physical environments," he stated.
In the overall ranking, Massachusetts leads the list with a score of 73.64, followed by North Dakota, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and Maine.
No state from the so-called "Sunbelt" made it to the top 10.
In fact, many of them ranked at the bottom: Arkansas (46), Georgia (47), South Carolina (48), Nevada (49), Alabama (50), and Mississippi (51).
