The Florida Republican Party withdrawn this Saturday a line of t-shirts, caps, and other items themed around deportation after the Home Depot chain protested the use of a logo similar to theirs.
According to the note from Miami Herald, the products, marketed under the name “The Deport Depot”, were inspired by the new immigrant detention center presented this week by Governor Ron DeSantis, which was named “Deportation Depot.”
However, the merchandise used the distinctive orange box and the typography of Home Depot, which sparked a formal complaint from the company.
Beth Marlowe, spokesperson for Home Depot, pointed out to the Herald that the a company did not authorize the party to use its brand and that they had already contacted the political organization to resolve the matter.
Although the line remained available on the website this Saturday afternoon, it was removed just a few hours later along with social media posts that promoted it.
The initiative was part of the party's attempts to raise funds through products related to state migration policy.
Previously, following the inauguration of the "Alligator Alcatraz" detention center in the Everglades, t-shirts, buttons, and other commemorative items were also launched for $30 each.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced on Thursday the opening of a second detention center for immigrants in a state prison in the northern part of the state, known as “Deportation Depot,” which will be located at the Baker Correctional Institution, about 70 kilometers west of Jacksonville.
The new center will initially have 1,300 beds for detainees, although the authorities stated that it could be expanded to 2,000.
The governor emphasized that the estimated cost of adapting the site will be six million dollars, far below the budget of the center in the Everglades, which exceeds 245 million.
