This Florida beach has recorded the highest number of shark attacks in U.S. history

The beaches of Florida top the historical ranking of shark attacks in the U.S. from as far back as 1642 to 2024.

Three of them are in the top ten of the most recorded attacks, according to a report by the tide forecasting platform Tideschart.

New Smyrna Beach, with a total of 277 incidents, holds the top position on the list that spans a period of 382 years.

According to the report, at this beach about 15 miles south of Daytona Beach, in Volusia County, the recorded incidents are “more than four times the rate of the second highest-ranked beach.”

Specifically, Daytona Beach ranks second with 67 shark attacks, and Cocoa Beach is third with 39.

Then, the fourth place is held by Myrtle Beach, in South Carolina.

The fifth spot returns to Florida: the iconic Palm Beach, in Palm Beach County, records 35 shark attacks.

Palm Beach County included two more beaches in the top ten: Jupiter Beach Park in eighth place with 23; and Riviera Beach in ninth with 21.

For its part, Miami Beach ranks 12th alongside St. Augustine Beach and Galveston, Texas, with 17 shark attacks since 1642.

Despite this list, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission explains that "it is extremely unlikely for a person to be bitten by a shark in Florida's waters, and bites rarely pose a life-threatening risk."

This week, an eight-year-old boy was bitten by a shark while snorkeling and spearfishing with his father and sister at Horseshoe Reef, off the coast of Key Largo, Florida.

In July, for its part, a man in his 40s was attacked by a shark at Hollywood Beach, in Broward County, while he was swimming peacefully.
