The Florida Attorney General, James Uthmeier, has requested to open an investigation against former Democratic Senator Linda Stewart, 76, after she posted a warning on Facebook about the presence of agents from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Lynx Central bus station in downtown Orlando.

The report, which has shaken local politics, places the migrant community at the center, for whom ICE raids represent fear, family separation, and the risk of deportation.

“I have absolutely done nothing wrong!”, Stewart responded to Florida Phoenix, the outlet that reported the controversy. The former senator defended that her message simply reflected what any citizen can observe in a public space.

“In all their freedom of expression, I don’t know why they would think that could lead to my arrest”, he added.

Nonetheless, prosecutor Uthmeier accused Stewart of "harassing law enforcement" and requested that Orange County State Attorney Monique Worrell investigate the case.

The request came just hours after Uthmeier also urged Worrell to halt another legal proceeding, highlighting the political backdrop of the confrontation.

But beyond the tension between prosecutors and public figures, what is at stake is the peace of mind of hundreds of migrants in Orlando, a city that has served as a refuge for Cuban, Venezuelan, and Central American families.

An alert like Stewart's can mean that someone decides not to leave their home, not to take their children to school, or to avoid public transportation out of fear of being stopped.

In communities accustomed to sharing information verbally about migration operations, social media has become a key space for warning about raids.

Mixed reactions

Stewart explained that he received the information through a friend and simply shared it. However, the post caught the attention of far-right activist Laura Loomer, who accused the former senator of “doxxing” ICE agents.

Prosecutor Uthmeier, who months ago launched a program to protect agents in such exposure cases, took up the complaint and turned it into a political issue.

From Worrell's office, however, they reminded the Florida Phoenix that investigations are carried out by law enforcement, and that, to date, they have not received any formal cases.
