Three Cubans were detained in Mérida, Yucatán, accused of involvement in a million-dollar robbery at two homes, a case that once again highlights the plight of many migrants from the island in Mexico, caught between precarious circumstances and criminalization.

According to a statement from the Yucatán Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the arrested individuals are Yalesky “N”, 50 years old; Rolando “N”, 32; and Yoel David “N”, 26, who allegedly forced open the doors of two residences in the Leandro Valle neighborhood to steal more than one million Mexican pesos in cash — equivalent to about 50 thousand U.S. dollars — along with jewelry and other valuables.

In the first residence, according to the report, they allegedly took more than a million pesos and jewelry valued at approximately 80 thousand. In the second one, 35 thousand pesos, jewelry worth about 50 thousand, as well as a laptop and three cell phones.

The three Cubans were made available to the judicial authority that ordered their capture. According to the SSP, they were engaged in common jobs among migrants in Mexico: merchant, platform driver, and delivery person.

The journalist Julio Astillero also echoed the case, highlighting the social dimension generated by the news: the nationality of the accused, combined with the Cuban migratory context in Mexico, fuels prejudices and stigmatization against a community that mostly seeks to survive in informal and precarious jobs.

On social media, the arrest has sparked mixed reactions, including outrage over the theft, but also calls not to generalize or hold the entire Cuban community in Mexico accountable for the actions of a few.
