The Cuban actress Maité Galbán opened her heart in a recent interview on the program “La Casa de Maka”, where she confessed that talking about Cuba brings her more pain than nostalgia.
"I don't miss her, it hurts me", he said upon realizing that what weighs him down the most is not the land itself, but the loss of sensitivity and humanity that he perceives on the island.
"Cuba is difficult, and it pains me that the ability to understand each other's problems has been lost. People have lost their sensitivity... I miss the people I love, my career, but I do not miss Cuba; it hurts," he expressed.
Galbán, who arrived in the United States in January 2024 after a long process of family reunification, stated that this step felt like a “gift” after years of waiting. “Arriving was like coming home, with my dad, my sister, my nephews, with my loved ones,” she shared amidst the emotion of a reunion she described as healing.
The actress, known for her career in Cuban television and theater, also spoke about the personal cost of emigrating and how distance affects the life of an exile. “Leaving Cuba and distancing oneself from family involves going through very difficult moments; emigration is not just joy, it also brings tears and heartache,” she admitted.
Days earlier, Maité Galbán had shared a video on TikTok that generated a wave of reactions due to the sincerity of her words. There, she reflected on the challenges of her life in the United States and how she has been overcoming each obstacle.
“Everything they told me was impossible, step by step, I have been achieving”, she stated, referring to the prejudices she faced upon arrival.
She recalled how they assured her that she wouldn't be able to work if she had to take care of young children, or that she couldn't drive because she had never done so in Cuba. “Today I work, I have my license, I had surgery and I'm paying for it without asking anyone for a dime,” she stated firmly.
With a direct tone, the actress sent a message of encouragement to those going through similar situations. “Don't let anyone pity you, nor should you pity yourself. Get up and walk, because no one else will solve your life for you,” she noted.
The video, shared from her account @maite.galban, gathered hundreds of supportive comments, many from Cubans who resonated with her words. "Congratulations, you are a warrior," "You are a role model," and "I have also gone through the same thing," were some of the most common reactions.
The testimony of Maité Galbán encapsulates the contradictions experienced by thousands of Cubans in exile, torn between leaving behind a painful homeland and the determination to forge a new path in a different land.
With tears in her eyes when speaking about Cuba and determination when discussing her new life, the actress made it clear that her story is not one of victimhood, but of resilience and hope.
