The Missouri player who correctly guessed half of the historic Powerball jackpot of 1.787 billion dollars came forward this week at the state lottery headquarters in Jefferson City to claim their cash prize.
Their identity remains confidential - the law in Missouri allows it - but in an interview with the Missouri Lottery, they shared several phrases that capture the thrill of the new life that is beginning.
The man, who described himself as a homebody, said he hopes to take some time off and spend time with his wife, according to a press release from the Missouri Lottery.
“I will be myself for a year”, he said as he collected his prize.
“The perfect day is sitting at home doing what I do: relaxing”, he added.
Referring to his wife, he joked: "Now she's going to kick me out of the city."
The man pointed out that it was hard to grasp the large amount. “I’m a millionaire, a multibillionaire, and last night I did the laundry…,” he said incredulously.
He described the sleepless nights he endured since realizing that his ticket was the winner, stating: “It's the best problem I've ever had.”
The winning ticket was purchased at a QuikTrip gas station in St. Louis, according to the Missouri Lottery.
QuikTrip in San Luis received a bonus of $50,000 for selling the winning ticket.
His profession and other personal details have not been revealed, and unless he chooses otherwise, he may remain anonymous indefinitely.
How did he/she get paid and how much will he/she receive?
The winner chose a one-time cash payment of approximately $410.3 million (before taxes), instead of the annualized plan of $893.5 million, which is paid in 30 installments.
The winning numbers for September 6 were: 11 – 23 – 44 – 61 – 62 and Powerball 17; Power Play x2.
The other winning ticket was validated at Big's (Fredericksburg, Texas), but its holder has not yet been publicly identified, according to reports.
The lottery that broke the streak and nearly set a record
The mega jackpot from September 6 ended a streak of 42 drawings without a grand prize winner, which had been ongoing since May, and became the second largest jackpot in the history of the U.S. lottery (behind the $2.04 billion in California, won by a single player on November 7, 2022).
In addition to the two big winners, over 9 million tickets won some prize on September 6th:
-18 matched five white balls (1 million dollars each).
-2 raised that amount to 2 million with the Power Play option.
-232 tickets won $50,000 (4 matches + Powerball) and 90 reached $100,000 (4 matches + Powerball + Power Play).
And the winner of Texas?
As of the latest available report, Texas had not publicly announced its lucky winner. Similar to Missouri, state regulations limit how much can be revealed about the prize recipient.
What is known is that, like its counterpart in Missouri, it chose cash payment; the final net amount varies due to state tax burdens.
With the claimed check, long-term decisions open up: tax planning, asset protection, charity, or investments.
For now, the Missouri winner makes it clear that the first year will be low-profile with simple routines.
