The Great Theatre of Havana Alicia Alonso, one of the most emblematic architectural and cultural symbols of Cuba, is in a state of evident deterioration and neglect, according to citizen reports recently shared on social media.
The user Sebastián Milo posted striking images of the theater's entrances, where trash piles up in the corners, visible stains of urine mark the columns, and homeless individuals sleep at the entrance.
"The theater...", wrote Milo in his post accompanied by photos that have generated dozens of outraged comments.
This scene of urban decay stands in stark contrast to the image that the theater presented after its major renovation completed in 2015, which included a comprehensive restoration of the facades, entrances, interior rooms, and stained glass, as well as modern technical systems for its performances.
For years, the theater has been the venue for major national and international events, standing out as the home of the Ballet Nacional de Cuba and an essential destination for cultural tourism.
However, the current images show a neglected, dirty, and dilapidated environment, which has led many to question the lack of maintenance of this building declared national heritage.
"They have literally thrown the theater in the trash. It's incredible how they destroy a temple of the arts," "For God's sake. A compendium of everything dark and negative. A fusion of neglect and disinterest," "What a shame and what a disgrace," "It's total abandonment now... words fail me," commented some internet users on social media after seeing the post.
Some remembered that years ago this situation was already being warned about. “I mentioned it in a comment one day, and a man told me it was a lie,” recounted a user from Facebook.
The Gran Teatro de La Habana, inaugurated in 1915, is one of the most visited buildings in the capital, and its current deterioration highlights the lack of attention to historical and cultural heritage by the authorities.
Two years ago, it closed due to termites in the roof, and then leaks were reported in the facility.
