Anthony, a 27-year-old Cuban resident in Arizona, lost his car while working as an Amazon Flex delivery driver and now faces a debt of one thousand dollars, in addition to losing his means of livelihood.
The story was revealed this Sunday by journalist Javier Díaz, who recalled that he interviewed Anthony in 2022, when the young man was hospitalized after contracting a bacteria that nearly cost him a leg.
“Since arriving in the United States, it has not been easy for him. He overcame a serious illness and is now going through something terrible again,” Díaz wrote in a post on Facebook.
According to the communicator, the fire occurred right after Anthony finished one of his delivery routes in Arizona.
The vehicle, which was his work tool, was completely destroyed.
His friends opened a GoFundMe account to help him pay off the debt and raise money to buy another car.
In the campaign description, Anthony humbly recounted what happened: "Thank God I am physically okay, but my work tool is completely destroyed. That car was what allowed me to go out every day to deliver packages and earn a living through hard work and dedication."
The young Cuban explained that he is not looking for luxury, but rather an opportunity to move forward.
"It wasn't easy to watch the result of so much hard work disappear in just a few minutes. Today, I am asking for help not for whims, but to be able to buy another car and continue working. Being a delivery driver has been my way of getting ahead, and I don't want to give up," he wrote.
So far, the GoFundMe campaign has raised $1,893 of the $3,000 goal.
Anthony thanked the expressions of support he received and said he felt overwhelmed by the solidarity of his friends and compatriots.
"I felt embarrassed to accept the help, but I am very grateful. It was never my intention to raise funds in this way," he said to Javier Díaz, who highlighted his effort, humility, and perseverance.
Anthony's case reflects the challenges that many Cuban immigrants face in the United States, where the daily struggle to get ahead is often interrupted by unforeseen circumstances.
Nevertheless, the story of this young man also showcases the strength of the Cuban community and the solidarity that emerges when one of their own needs to start over.
