The head coach of the Cuba baseball team, Germán Mesa, defended the call-up of Alfredo Despaigne, stating that his presence on the roster for the 2025 Baseball America's Cup in Panama goes beyond statistics and symbolizes the identity, character, and unity of the national team.
During a press conference in the Adolfo Luque Hall of the Latinoamericano Stadium, Mesa answered questions from the media about the inclusion of the veteran from Granma, emphasizing that his role goes beyond just batting.
“Despaigne is a role model both on and off the field. He is a man who guides the younger players, instills discipline, and embodies the spirit of this team,” stated the strategist in comments reported by Prensa Latina.
Despaigne, the emblem of leadership
The manager explained that, despite his experience, Despaigne maintains his commitment and physical condition, and that his international experience is an invaluable advantage for a high-level tournament.
"He is a player with character, accustomed to big stages. Having him on the roster brings leadership, confidence, and sets an example. In a young team, that presence is essential," said Mesa.
The Granma slugger, who has served as captain of the national team in multiple events, returns as a symbol of continuity and pride at a time when Cuban baseball is trying to rebuild its competitive spirit on the continental stage.
Versatility and balance in the workforce
Beyond the case of Despaigne, Germán Mesa defended the overall structure of the team, which was announced on Sunday and combines experienced players with rising figures.
“We are looking for versatility. We want ballplayers who can perform multiple roles and adapt to different game situations,” he explained.
Regarding the criticisms for the absence of a starting forward and a starting midfielder, the coach argued that the goal was to bet on tactical flexibility.
"Tailon Sánchez and Luis Vicente Mateo are examples of that philosophy. Both can move confidently across the field and fulfill different roles according to the needs of the tournament."
Regarding pitching, Mesa highlighted that the coaching staff emphasized versatility and the ability to adapt in different contexts.
"We have pitchers who can start, relieve, and close. The idea is to have a staff capable of adapting to any scenario," he explained.
Cuba faces a high-level group
Cuba will be in Group A of the tournament, along with Mexico, Curaçao, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela, which is considered by experts to be one of the most challenging groups of the competition.
The team will begin its training camp this Tuesday in Matanzas, before traveling to the Isthmus of Panama.
The 2025 Baseball America's Cup, which will take place from November 13 to 22, will bring together 12 teams divided into two groups, with the top three from each group advancing to the Super Round (November 19-21).
The medals will be decided on the 22nd, in a competition that promises to be a key test for the new competitive cycle of Cuban baseball.
