During a presidential visit to El Cobre (Santiago de Cuba), a young man directly questioned the ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel to report that “no one has come” to assist the victims in his community and that “they left us alone,” referring to the absence of authorities and organized support.
In a video shared by internet user Omar Sayut Taquechel, the neighbor stated that in the area “there are children” and “more than 2,000 people”, and demanded that the real situation of those affected be acknowledged.
The young man explained that the residents have had to organize themselves independently to address needs, “houses in the building with children, families of four houses, of five houses,” but he insisted that it is not his responsibility to go “door to door” to register deficiencies: “I am not part of [what they distribute].”
He assured that those evacuated from their homes remain unattended and that the area delegate "has not come by." "This is what I want you to know, to be aware of," he said in front of Díaz-Canel.
In his testimony, he also recounted that there was no way to enter or leave the place and that in his home "five children live," while pleading not to be silenced.
He emphasized that, despite the community efforts, effective leadership was lacking: “And the strength? Who inspires the people?”.
He also mentioned that there are dengue-infected doctors working under those conditions and questioned why children in the area have been "sitting by the roadside for four days" without any response.
The demand highlighted the lack of institutional presence in Guamuta and the delays in addressing vulnerable families, while also calling for information and leadership to coordinate assistance.
“I live in Guamuta, no one has gone up there”, he repeated before those present, stressing that his complaint aimed to ensure they are aware of what is happening in the area.
The statements, made face-to-face with the president and recorded in the first person, reflect the discomfort of residents who claim to have resorted to self-management to meet basic needs while they await official solutions.
The scene closes with his call to be heard: “President, excuse me, let me see if I can speak… I'm going to tell you the truth here, normally.”
