“We condemn the abuses and mistreatment suffered by political prisoners in the prisons of the Cuban regime. It is alarming that prisoners from the 11J protests, like Yosvany Rosell García, are on a hunger strike to protest against the constant abuses. We join their call for the release of all political prisoners. Everyone,” reads a post on Facebook from the diplomatic mission.

"The demand for the release of everyone is urgent because there are at least these 10 political prisoners who are on a hunger strike," they added.

The political prisoners on hunger strike are Yosvany Rosell García Caso, José Antonio Pompa López, Josiel Guía Piloto, Lázaro Piloto Romero, Adrián Fernando Domínguez, Daniel Alfaro Frías, Aníbal Yaciel Palau, and Óscar Corría Sánchez.

The most critical case is that of Yosvani Rosell García Caso, who has gone 24 days without food and is in a state of extreme weakness.

The union activist Iván Hernández Carrillo reported that the strikers are “isolated and cut off from communication” and that prison authorities are attempting to break the protest by pressuring their families. In the case of García Caso, only one visit from his wife was allowed to persuade him to end the strike, “but he remains steadfast,” he affirmed.

The Cuban Observatory of Human Rights (OCDH) warned that García Caso's life is in danger "with each passing minute," and demanded his immediate release and urgent medical attention. Other independent sources confirmed that the prisoner can hardly move and needs to be transported in a wheelchair. In the case of the independent medium Alas Tensas, the number of hunger strikers was reported to be ten.

Meanwhile, Pompa López's wife expressed concern about the complete lack of information regarding his health: "He has kidney problems and hasn't eaten for eleven days. No one calls, no one informs us of anything. I feel like they want to let the political prisoners die," she stated.

According to the Cuban Prison Documentation Center (CDPC), from March 2024 to March 2025, 1,858 serious incidents were recorded within the Cuban prison system, characterized by “extreme overcrowding, massive malnutrition, contaminated water, and lack of medical care.”

The director of the CDPC, Camila Rodríguez, denounced that “the Cuban penitentiary system is today a space of human degradation and political repression,” and called for a strong international response to what she described as “a structural policy of punishment and silence.”

In this context, opposition leaders in exile, among them José Daniel Ferrer, called for a demonstration this Sunday in Miami to support political prisoners on hunger strike and all those imprisoned for their beliefs in Cuba.
