Osmani Hernández Padroza, a 35-year-old electrical lineman, has made a public appearance following the serious work accident he suffered in September while addressing a malfunction in San Miguel del Padrón, in Havana.
Her most recent image shared on social media – where she is seen without her two arms but with an optimistic smile – has sparked a wave of messages of encouragement, admiration, and solidarity among thousands of Cubans.
Digital creator Alexander Ríos Cruz shared the photo of Osmani along with an emotional message that captures the popular sentiment.
“Aquí está Osmani: the electrician, the lineman, the champion of life. The one who never gave up and faced each challenge with great strength. You are a true warrior, Osmani. Many blessings to you, and may thousands of good things always come your way,” wrote Ríos Cruz.
"Few people in this world are as strong as you, I can assure you. Life smiled at you, and you smiled back. Thousands of Cubans were aware of you," he added.
The dramatic accident
On September 12, Osmani received an electric shock while working on Pepe Prieto Street in the Havana municipality of San Miguel del Padrón.
According to witnesses, he was hanging from the pole, convulsing and vomiting, until a group of neighbors brought him down and took him in a private vehicle to Miguel Enríquez Hospital. There was no immediate presence of firefighters or specialized personnel.
The diagnosis was devastating: severe burns on both arms and irreversible damage that required amputation.
From the hospital, Osmani sent a calm message to his family, which impacted thousands of Cubans.
"I have willpower... and I'm aware of what’s going to happen. So don’t worry, Mom, it's okay. I know that at least I'm going to lose my arms, but I will keep my life," she said then.
Despite the pain, her attitude was an example of strength.
The public responded with a wave of support. Even more dramatic was learning that she had requested a leave of absence months before the accident, but the company had not accepted it due to a staff shortage.
The institutional response and the complaints
The Electric Company of Havana assured shortly after that Osmani had "everything necessary" for his recovery and expressed gratitude to the health system, the medical team, and the worker's surroundings.
On social media, they highlighted her good spirits and her desire to see her son.
However, statements from his ex-partner, Gretel Aparicio, contradicted this version, claiming that the family had to turn to citizen support to obtain bandages and medications, and that institutional promises had not been fully met.
This contradiction has reignited the debate about the working conditions of electrical workers in Cuba, in the midst of a collapsed healthcare system and lacking resources, as even authorities from the Ministry of Public Health have acknowledged.
Cubans react: "You are a warrior."
Ríos Cruz's post this Tuesday has moved hundreds of Cubans, who left messages full of affection, faith, and respect.
Osmani's recovery has been met with deep admiration and affection.
Many people celebrate his life, highlight his bravery, and see him as a true warrior and an example of courage.
Although he has lost his arms, they see him as a champion who inspires with his strength and positive attitude. Some consider him a leader and a symbol of heroism, emphasizing that his story has a greater purpose.
The messages are filled with blessings and well-wishes, and several users express their hope that he receives assistance from abroad, including prosthetics to improve his quality of life.
A symbol of hope
Osmani's story has transcended the boundaries of the accident. Today, he stands as a symbol of resilience, hope, and humanity. From a hospital bed, with his arms amputated but wearing a full smile, he reminds us that life, with all its scars, is worth living.
Her public reappearance, amidst the pain, is also a call for institutional responsibility and popular solidarity. Because behind the lineman’s uniform, there is a father, a son, a friend… a champion of life.
