Miami is undergoing a historic transformation in its urban and roadway infrastructure with the construction of the Signature Bridge, a six-arch bridge that promises to become an architectural icon of the city.
This mega-project, which progresses along the I-395/SR 836/I-95 corridor, aims to enhance mobility, strengthen safety, and reconnect neighborhoods that have been fragmented for decades by outdated highways.
The project is the result of collaboration between the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the Greater Miami Expressway Authority, and the contractor Archer Western - de Moya Group Joint Venture.
Its goal is not only to facilitate vehicle traffic but also to integrate urban planning, cutting-edge engineering, and community spaces.
Tangible progress
By December 2025, two of the six arches of the Signature Bridge have already been completed, including the tallest arch at 330 feet, with its 86 prefabricated segments installed.
Meanwhile, work continues on the elevated dual roadway over SR 836, which will allow for a more efficient flow between I-395, I-95, and the MacArthur Causeway.
According to a report by Telemundo 51, the foundations for the new main road of I-395 are completed, and prefabricated pavement segments are being installed, even over the railway tracks.
The modernization of SR 836 is progressing with columns, beams, and slabs being lifted by large cranes.
More than a bridge: spaces for citizenship
The project includes 55 acres beneath the elevated highway designated for public spaces, paths for pedestrians and cyclists, green areas, and recreational zones.
These improvements, gathered under the "Underdeck / Heritage Trail" plan, will connect historic neighborhoods such as Overtown with Biscayne Bay, revitalizing urban areas that have been isolated for years.
Meanwhile, the construction work is causing nighttime closures and temporary detours in the area, information that the Connecting Miami project keeps updated for drivers.
Preparation for the future
In addition to the construction of the bridge, key infrastructure improvements are being implemented: new drainage systems, elevation of streets to mitigate flooding from high tides, expansion of lanes and ramps, optimization of entrances and exits, and road safety measures.
Everything is aimed at reducing congestion and improving the daily traffic of over 100,000 vehicles.
A change in urban paradigm
Beyond its role as a transportation link, the Signature Bridge redefines the relationship between the city and its inhabitants. Its design, featuring artistic nighttime lighting and arches that will dominate the skyline, will make Miami a benchmark of urban modernity.
When completed, scheduled for the end of 2029, the project will not only be a tourist attraction and a hub for efficient mobility but also an example of how infrastructure can unite communities, create public spaces, and symbolize the development of the city.
With a cost exceeding 866 million dollars, the Signature Bridge is Miami's most ambitious initiative to transform its urban landscape and position itself as a city ready to face the challenges of the future.
