The United States ambassador to Cuba, Mike Hammer, sent a message to the Cubans on the occasion of New Year's Eve, acknowledging the hardships faced by the population during the year 2025 and reaffirming Washington's support for the island's desires for freedom and change.

On the eve of New Year's Eve, we acknowledge that everyday Cubans have endured a very difficult year, with constant blackouts, chikungunya and other viruses, a health crisis, garbage in the streets, Hurricane Melissa, and, in addition, that repression which prevents people from expressing themselves freely, expressed the diplomat in a message released by the US diplomatic mission in Havana.

The ambassador emphasized the resilient spirit of the Cuban people and underscored that the United States “wishes for that ambition, that desire of the Cuban people for change, to be realized in 2026.”

Hammer closed his message with an expression in English: “Let’s ring in the new year!”, which translates to “Let’s toast to the new year!”, conveying optimism and hope for the future of Cuba.

The message arrives in the context of a deep economic and social crisis on the island, characterized by food shortages, prolonged blackouts, and the ongoing repression of the regime against activists, journalists, and citizens demanding fundamental freedoms.

From Washington, the U.S. government has reiterated its commitment to human rights and support for Cubans seeking a free and prosperous future.
