Cuban-American congress members celebrate Maduro's downfall and warn: “Díaz-Canel and Ortega are next.”
Several Cuban-American congress members from Florida reacted with enthusiasm to the news of the U.S. military assault against Nicolás Maduro's regime in Venezuela and the alleged capture of the president and his wife, announced this Saturday by U.S. President Donald J. Trump.
"Our hemisphere will be the hemisphere of freedom."
The Republican congressman Carlos A. Giménez was one of the first to speak out, writing on his official account: “Maduro has fallen, Díaz-Canel and Ortega are next. We will meet in a free Venezuela. Our hemisphere will be the hemisphere of freedom!”
On his part, Mario Díaz-Balart described the military operation as “an example of decisive leadership,” stating that the action ordered by Trump is in response to an “unprecedented threat” to U.S. national security. In his message, the legislator detailed that Maduro's regime has “sent drugs that have killed countless Americans, kidnapped innocent citizens, and collaborated with enemies of the United States such as Iran, China, Russia, Cuba, Hezbollah, and Hamas.”
"While others hesitated, President Trump acknowledged the threat for what it was and acted with determination. All Americans should thank President Trump, Secretary Rubio, Secretary Hegseth, and our heroic Armed Forces," he added.
The congresswoman María Elvira Salazar also celebrated the end of the "narco-terror imposed by the Maduro regime," highlighting the leadership of President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. “Now is the time for the legitimate leaders of Venezuela to restore freedom and rebuild the nation. Tonight, a new cry for freedom resonates throughout the hemisphere: strong, clear, and unstoppable. Long live freedom!” she wrote.
Military assault and capture of Nicolás Maduro
The president Trump announced on social media that Nicolás Maduro and his wife have been captured and taken out of Venezuela, as part of a large-scale military operation against the Chavista regime. The American leader will hold a press conference at 11:00 a.m. in Mar-a-Lago to provide further details.
According to regional reports, intense bombings were recorded during the early hours of Saturday at Venezuelan military installations, including La Carlota, Fuerte Tiuna, and the Federal Legislative Palace in Caracas. Blackouts and communication outages were also reported in several areas of the capital and neighboring states.
So far, there is no independent confirmation from the State Department or the Pentagon regarding the capture of the chavista leader, but the news has had a significant political impact throughout the region.
