Adam Johnson, known for his smiling image while carrying Nancy Pelosi's lectern during the U.S. Capitol assault on January 6, 2021, has returned to the public stage with a new goal: a local political position in Florida.

The now 41-year-old candidate has submitted his nomination as a Republican for a general seat on the Manatee County Commission, in the southern part of Tampa, an area with a conservative majority.

He did it on January 6, 2026, a date he deliberately chose.

“Without a doubt, it is good for generating interest”, he stated to the television station WWSB-TV.

His campaign logo is, in fact, the outline of the viral photograph that made him famous five years ago.

From "the man at the podium" to political aspirant

Johnson rose to prominence on January 6, 2021, when he was photographed inside the U.S. Capitol, smiling, waving, and carrying the podium of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The scene became one of the most widespread symbols of the attack on the Congress by supporters of Donald Trump, who sought to prevent the certification of the election results.

During the judicial process he faced for his involvement in those events, Johnson pleaded guilty to "entering or remaining in a restricted building," a misdemeanor.

He was sentenced to 75 days in prison, one year of supervised release, 200 hours of community service, and a fine of $5,000.

In his sentencing hearing, he admitted that posing with the podium was a “very stupid idea.”

However, in more recent statements, he has downplayed what happened, comparing his offense to "crossing the street recklessly" and claiming that he only regrets having been punished with prison.

"I entered a building, took a photo with a piece of furniture, and left," he said.

He also stated, “I believe I exercised my First Amendment right to speak and protest.”

Notoriety as an electoral strategy

Despite his history, Johnson has made his past a central element of his campaign.

The explicit use of the silhouette from the viral image in their propaganda is evidence that they seek to turn the scandal into political capital.

"I will be subject to a more rigorous scrutiny than any other candidate in this race," he acknowledged.

"That is positive, a good lesson for all citizens, because for the first time in our lives, we will meet our local politicians who are taking action," he added in statements to the local press.

The election in which they are participating will be held on August 18, and for now, there are at least four registered Republican candidates for the primary.

The current chairman of the commission is not seeking re-election, which paves the way for new candidates in a local environment that is deeply aligned with the Republican Party.

In addition to his candidacy, Johnson has an ongoing legal conflict with local authorities: in March 2025, he filed a lawsuit against Manatee County and six of its commissioners, related to a legal decision made by the local government.

The county described the lawsuit as "completely unfounded."

Regarding his proposals, Johnson has focused his message on combating what he considers inefficient management of public funds, as well as reducing property taxes and curbing excessive development in the region.

He has also expressed his dissatisfaction with what he interprets as a departure from the principles of the MAGA agenda (Make America Great Again).

"I am tired of seeing how MAGA principles are ignored at the local level," it reads on their website.

Is there an emerging trend in Republican politics?

Johnson's case is not isolated. At least three individuals involved in the Capitol assault unsuccessfully ran for Congress in 2024, all as Republicans.

Among them stands out Jake Lang, accused of assaulting an officer, civil disorder, and other crimes, before being pardoned by Donald Trump.

Lang announced his candidacy for the vacant seat of Senator Marco Rubio in the federal Senate for Florida.

These candidacies reflect a progressive normalization of those accused of January 6 within certain sectors of the Republican Party, especially following the pardons issued by Trump after his return to power.

In Johnson's case, although he had already served his sentence, his current narrative seems to align with a reinterpretation of the assault as a legitimate act of protest rather than a crime.
