The Provincial Court of Santiago de Cuba imposed sentences of between 28 and 30 years in prison on those responsible for the murder of a security guard that took place in the town of Nuevo Mundo, in Dos Caminos, on June 13, 2024.

According to journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, the victim, a man nearly 60 years old who worked as a guard at a local cooperative, was killed with extreme violence during a robbery attempt.

The attackers sought to steal a mule and, in order to silence it, they gagged it, stabbed it in the head and neck, and finally suffocated it by putting a stone in its mouth.

Local residents recounted that the guard had warned his superiors about previous attempted thefts and had even confronted a thief he knew. Despite his alerts, no action was taken, and the man continued to work double shifts due to staff shortages.

After the crime, several people were arrested, and a key testimony pointed to one of the alleged perpetrators, who lived near the cooperative and fled after being tracked down by a search dog.

More than 18 months passed before the case went to trial in December 2025, a delay that prolonged the family's suffering, as their mother died without knowing the verdict.

Finally, the court sentenced two of those involved to 28 years in prison and another two to 30 years. The family members reported that at least one person was excluded from the judicial process. Nonetheless, they expressed their gratitude for the support of the journalist in their quest for justice.

"Justice arrived late, and the void left by violence cannot be filled with years of imprisonment. But the truth has been recorded, the silence has been broken, and the memory of the victim remains," concluded Mayeta Labrada.
