Amid the energy and economic crisis affecting the Cuban population, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, announced this Sunday that her government plans to send humanitarian aid to Cuba, including food, basic supplies, and other essential products, while diplomatic efforts are made to resolve issues related to the oil supply to the Island.

From the coast of Sonora, where she led an official event, Sheinbaum explained that the assistance will be coordinated by the Secretary of the Navy and aims to alleviate the shortages faced by families, hospitals, and essential services in the largest of the Antilles.

"We are already working on everything necessary to send humanitarian aid that the Cuban people require, including various essential supplies," declared the leader.

Sheinbaum's statements openly contradict the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who a few hours ago claimed that he was the one who directly asked the head of the Mexican Executive to stop sending oil to Cuba, and asserted that “she complied.”

In contrast, Sheinbaum insisted: "We never spoke with President Trump about the issue of oil with Cuba," and emphasized that Mexico's diplomacy is focused on finding solutions to prevent a humanitarian crisis on the island, without risking Mexican sovereignty or the relationship with Washington.

Trump, for his part, has intensified pressure on Cuba by imposing tariffs on any country that supplies oil to the Island, a move that international analysts point to as part of his strategy to force negotiations from a position of strength.

Palpable crisis on the island

The lack of fuel in Cuba has led to prolonged blackouts, a paralysis of transportation, and restrictions on medical care and other basic services, a situation that experts warn could worsen in the coming weeks if energy supplies are not restored.

While Mexico considers alternatives to support the Cuban people, Sheinbaum has made it clear that humanitarian aid will continue as a gesture of solidarity, even as the issue of oil remains a subject of diplomatic negotiation.

“We are seeking through all diplomatic channels because it is a fundamental humanitarian aid issue for the island,” the leader stated, at a time when regional geopolitics and tensions with the United States are putting unprecedented pressure on Havana and its allies.
