In recent days, as the cold settled in Cuba, a group of young people from Cienfuegos organized a solidarity initiative to assist elderly individuals in vulnerable situations by preparing and distributing a warm soup in a neighborhood of the city.
The action was reported by Dayispi Rodríguez Jiménez, who called upon the neighbors through the Facebook group “Revolico Compra y Venta Cienfuegos” to inform elderly individuals without family or with limited resources about the activity.
In one of his posts, he wrote: “A soup is being prepared for vulnerable grandparents today at 1 PM on 71st Street between 46th and 48th, next to the Roberto Fleites primary school. Anyone who knows grandparents without resources or family, please pass on this message to them.”
The idea arose in response to the low temperatures recorded in the central part of the country, when thermometers dropped to unusually low levels, and the helplessness experienced by many individuals.
The young woman stated that the food was prepared with the intention of “keeping the little bodies warm” of the elderly, and she invited anyone who could help or notify those in need to join in.
The gesture occurred in a context of increasing concern for the situation of elderly people in Cuba, many of whom face food insecurity and live alone, a situation that worsens with the drop in temperatures.
Actions like this, arising from the spontaneous organization of citizens, highlight local efforts to address, even if temporarily, the most urgent needs of the most vulnerable sectors.
