A new survey from the Center for Public Affairs Research AP-NORC (Center for Public Affairs Research) reveals that around 60 percent of adults in the United States believe that President Donald Trump has gone too far by deploying federal immigration agents in cities across the country.
The study, conducted between February 5 and 8 with 1,156 adults, also indicates that nearly 38 percent approve of Trump's overall handling of immigration issues, a figure similar to that recorded in January.
The margin of error is 3.9 percentage points, according to the survey data.
The rejection is especially strong among Democrats and independents. Approximately nine out of ten Democrats and seven out of ten independents believe that the president exaggerated the use of federal agents and the enforcement of law during public protests.
Among Republicans, however, only a quarter share that view, while nearly half believe that the actions have been appropriate.
The survey also shows that the historical advantage of the Republican Party on the immigration issue has diminished.
About three in ten adults trust Republicans more to handle immigration, a proportion similar to those who prefer Democrats, while a comparable group does not trust either party.
Meanwhile, the image of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement remains negative for the majority.
Only about 30 percent of adults have a favorable opinion of the agency, with a significant partisan gap between Republicans, Democrats, and independents.
Although support for the president remains strong among his Republican base, the data suggests that his immigration strategy is losing traction among independent voters, a key segment in upcoming electoral processes.
In January, another survey from AP-NORC revealed that 56% of adults in the United States believed that President Donald Trump had gone too far in using military power to intervene in other countries.
The survey, conducted between January 8 and 11, 2026, shortly after the capture of the Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, revealed that the majority of Americans disapproved of the Republican president's foreign policy and were concerned about Washington's increasing military role abroad, reported AP.
According to the results, 61% of respondents disapproved of the way Trump handles foreign policy, compared to 37% who approved.
