The Democratic congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, representative for New York's 14th district, criticized the measures imposed on Cuba by the Donald Trump administration, comparing them to the situation in Gaza.

In statements to journalist Julian Andreone from Drop Site News, the legislator asserted that the Cuban scenario reproduces that logic of general sanctions that directly endangers the civilian population.

"This is what we have seen in Gaza: a new era of depravity. Previously, there were declared protections for innocent civilians, and now it is almost acceptable for the West to ignore the situation while people suffer from hunger or deprivation, simply because the actors or political regimes in that country are deemed unacceptable," he said.

The congresswoman warned that this shift in international behavior normalizes the suffering of entire populations under sanctions or blockades.

For her, the risk is not abstract. The lack of fuel can paralyze hospitals and basic services, leading to a potential humanitarian collapse.

"What we are witnessing is the possible abyss of hospitals running out of fuel. Innocent children and women could be in danger. It is up to all of us to defend human rights everywhere," he emphasized.

Ocasio-Cortez pointed out that the international community has become too tolerant of what she termed "acts of economic warfare" that punish entire populations, not just officials, and added that the stage for worsening the suffering of the Cuban people "was set in Gaza."

The congresswoman questioned Washington's measures to impose tariffs on countries that sell oil to the Island and warned that this policy threatens to further squeeze a population that is already under stress due to previous sanctions.

His statements come in the context of a broader debate in the United States about the impact of the sanctions and the embargo against Cuba.

Although Ocasio-Cortez has clarified that she is not a supporter of the Cuban government, she has reiterated her opposition to the U.S. embargo, believing that it directly harms the population.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is an American politician of Puerto Rican descent and one of the most prominent figures of democratic socialism within the Democratic Party.

She has represented the 14th congressional district of New York since 2019, which includes areas of the Bronx and Queens, and was re-elected in 2020.
