The United States Capitol Police arrested an armed man on Tuesday who was heading towards the legislative building in Washington, in an incident that resulted in no injuries or additional threats.
According to the agency EFE, the 18-year-old suspect exited a parked white Mercedes van on Maryland Avenue and ran towards the Capitol carrying a loaded shotgun.
The chief of the Capitol Police, Michael G. Sullivan, explained that the officers intercepted the suspect at the foot of a staircase near the west facade of the building.
The officers aimed their weapons at him and ordered him to drop the shotgun, an instruction that the young man complied with immediately before being arrested at the scene.
Authorities detailed that the man was wearing a tactical vest, gloves, and additional ammunition. Inside the vehicle, a Kevlar helmet and a gas mask were also found.
The arrested individual has been identified as Carter Camacho, a resident of Georgia. He faces charges for unlawful activities, carrying a rifle without a license, and possession of unregistered firearms and ammunition.
As a result of the incident, a section of Maryland Avenue near the Garfield Monument was temporarily closed while authorities sought public assistance in obtaining possible recordings of the event.
Although Congress was not in session this week, the incident occurs against the backdrop of increasing threats against lawmakers and the Capitol complex, following a rise in investigations related to communications and concerning behaviors directed at members of Congress.
