The Cuban musician Eliades Ochoa recently expressed his concern about the situation in Cuba, in a tone that contrasts with the image he has projected from the island for years.

In statements to La Vanguardia, the artist made it clear that he has an emotional connection to his homeland, but lives outside the country.

I would like to live in Santiago de Cuba, but I have my apartment in Madrid due to work commitments. I'm almost European now. I receive calls from all over Europe; I am reaping the benefits of many years of my career now with my tour 'I'm feeling better than ever', he said.

Ochoa, who developed much of his career within Cuba and gained international recognition without breaking from the system, now joins that chorus of voices describing an island marked by scarcity and dependence on remittances.

Everything is degraded over there and all the Cubans who can are sending money to family, he stated.

The sonero acknowledges the crisis in everyday life and directly blames "the big shots" who do everything wrong because it is the "people who suffer" as a result.

“Our island, so beautiful, so fertile, and so musical… its people also deserve to be happy,” the musician added, in a reflection that combines nostalgia with a distant and belated diagnosis of Cuban reality.
