"Don't lump me in with the others!": Cuban in Mexico asks not to be judged by fellow countrymen

A Cuban resident in Sonora has raised their voice on social media to distance themselves from certain behaviors of migrants from the island in Mexico that, as they report, are damaging the image of the entire community.

In a direct message filled with annoyance, the young man—identified as Kevin KL—publicly asked not to be grouped "in the same bag" when discussing Cubans living in the Aztec country. His complaint targets what he perceives as disrespectful attitudes from some compatriots, such as criticizing the food, supermarkets, and even the Mexicans themselves.

"The problem is that there are many of my fellow countrymen who are doing things wrong here in Mexico. And it's not fair that we all have to pay for those who think they're smarter than the rest," he expressed.

The Cuban specifically questioned the negative comparisons made with Mexico, pointing out the contradiction in criticizing basic aspects of a country that, in his view, has opened its doors to Cuban migrants in search of opportunities.

"They keep judging Mexican cuisine as if they knew a lot... and in Cuba, there's not even any food," he said, in a tone that mixed frustration with self-criticism. He also criticized the remarks about Mexican supermarkets, reminding others of the shortages experienced on the island.

Beyond the controversy, the message reflects an increasingly visible tension within the Cuban community abroad: the need to integrate, to be thankful for the opportunities, and at the same time, to protect the collective image.

From his experience in Sonora, Kevin KL made a call for reflection, especially directed at newly arrived Cubans or those in the process of adapting: “Realize that you are doing things the wrong way.”
