President Donald Trump received a delivery from McDonald's directly at the door of the Oval Office on Monday, creating a moment that went viral on social media and which the White House took the opportunity to promote as one of its signature tax laws.
The delivery person was Sharon Simmons, nicknamed "DoorDash Grandma" for the shirt she was wearing, who arrived with two bags from the fast-food chain and told the president: "I have a DoorDash order for you, Mr. President."
The White House spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, immediately posted the video on her official account and explained the background of the meeting: "Thanks to President Trump's signing of the No Tip Tax law, Sharron is using the $11,000 in tips she earned last year to support her family."
In the video, Trump quickly made a comment that also went viral: "This doesn't seem staged, does it? They're all your favorites. That's right. The request is doing a good job. The reason for this is that I heard you raised an extra $11,000 because the tax law is so great."
The phrase generated a broad debate about whether the meeting was spontaneous or a carefully orchestrated staging by the administration to promote the legislation.
The law Trump referred to is known as the "One Big Beautiful Bill," signed on July 4, 2025, which includes the provision "No Tax on Tips," allowing deductions of up to $25,000 in tips from federal taxable income for workers in occupations that traditionally receive such compensation, effective for the fiscal years 2025 to 2028.
The measure was approved in the Senate on July 1, 2025, by a vote of 51 to 50, with the decisive vote from Vice President JD Vance, and in the House on July 3 by 218 votes to 214, with unanimous opposition from the Democrats.
According to data from the Internal Revenue Service, out of more than 60 million tax returns filed by March 2026, 3.5 million taxpayers claimed the deduction for tips, resulting in an average reduction of $1,300 in their tax burden.
This Monday's meeting is not the first time Trump has had a public moment with McDonald's in the background.
In October 2024, during the presidential campaign, Trump fried fries and served at the drive-thru at a location in Feasterville-Trevose, Pennsylvania, to mock Kamala Harris, who claimed to have worked there as a young person. On that occasion, Trump said, "Now I've worked 15 minutes longer than Kamala at McDonald's."
In November 2025, now as the re-elected president, he participated in the McDonald's Impact Summit in Washington, where he stated: "I went from frying fries at McDonald's to being president of the United States."
Trump's relationship with the chain is long and well-documented: his usual order includes two Big Macs, two Filet-O-Fish, and a milkshake, and in 2019, he served McDonald's food to champion college athletes at the White House.
