Milena, the five-year-old girl who was detained along with her mother by immigration agents at McAllen Airport in Texas, is now with her father in California after spending more than 19 hours in a detention center.
Her mother, the Venezuelan doctor Rubeliz Bolívar, residing in emergency medicine at the South Texas Health System, was arrested on April 11 while they were heading to an asylum interview that had been pending for almost ten years.
The girl's father, Milenko Farías, welcomed his daughter with tears, and reported that the reunion was marked by the absence of the mother, who remains detained at the ICE Detention Center in the Valley in McAllen.
"She came out traumatized from there. The first thing she did when we got in the car was tell me: 'I miss my mommy, where is my mommy?'" the father recounted in statements to Telemundo.
This case adds to the second arrest of a Venezuelan doctor in South Texas in less than a week, after Dr. Ezequiel Véliz was detained at a checkpoint despite being in the process of regularizing his immigration status.
