The Conference of Catholic Bishops of Cuba (COCC) sent an official letter to Pope Leo XIV on Monday, expressing their support for the pontiff amid the public attacks he has faced in recent weeks from U.S. President Donald Trump.

The letter, signed by Mons. Arturo González Amador, Bishop of Santa Clara and President of the COCC, was published on the official website of the Catholic Church in Cuba, iglesiacubana.org.

"The Catholic Bishops of Cuba wish to express to His Holiness our deepest communion and filial affection," states the document, as a gesture of support for the Pope during a time of tension with the U.S. administration.

The Pope himself had declared that "I am not afraid, not even of the Trump administration", in response to the pressures received from Washington.

The confrontation between Trump and the pope has not ceased in recent weeks.

The U.S. president went so far as to demand that someone tell the Pope that Iran has killed thousands of people, in one of his most recent public attacks against the pontiff.

Pope Leo XIV also has a special connection with Cuba, as he descends maternally from Manuel José Ramos, a family originally from Havana, which has fostered a particular sense of closeness between Cuban Catholics and the new pontiff.

The letter from the Cuban bishops arrives in a context of profound crisis on the island.

The episcopate itself has acknowledged on previous occasions that the situation in Cuba is inhumane and that the country must change, words that reflect the difficult reality faced by the faithful and the church institution in Cuban territory, reported ACI Prensa.
