Two wildfires remain active in the province of Pinar del Río, where forces from the Forest Corps (CGB) and the agricultural system continue to work to contain the blazes, which have collectively destroyed more than 600 hectares of forest.
The largest fire broke out last Friday in the area of La Lanza, in the municipality of Minas de Matahambre, and has already affected around 540 hectares of forest, as reported to the Cuban News Agency by Rubén Guerra Corrales, head of fire management and control at the CGB.
Classified as a fire of massive proportions, it is the first of its kind recorded in the province during the period from January to May of 2026. Control efforts have been hindered by the intense drought, the mountainous terrain, and the abundant dry vegetation, such as weeds, grasses, and pine needles.
In the area, there are around 160 forestry officials and park rangers from Minas de Matahambre, Mantua, and Viñales, along with workers from the mining company. The brigades open containment paths using heavy machinery and prepare counter-fires, which are carried out in the late afternoon and evening, when winds and temperatures decrease.
In addition, experienced specialists conduct surveys to identify vulnerable points of the fire, such as rivers, streams, and roads, with the aim of halting its advance. So far, the incident does not pose a danger to populated areas.
The second fire, which began on April 13 in the area of La Güira, between the main municipality and San Juan y Martínez, has affected around 60 hectares of pine and semi-deciduous forest.
On that front, control lines are being established in areas such as El Encinal and Sumidero, where the flames have spread. Around 60 personnel, including forest rangers, forestry workers, and volunteers, are involved in the efforts, which also report no risk to the population.
So far this year, Pinar del Río has reported and extinguished 39 wildfires. Only one was caused by natural factors, while the rest are attributed to human negligence.
