The Cuban baseball player Óscar Luis Colás signed with the Saraperos de Saltillo to compete in the 2026 season of the Mexican Baseball League, as confirmed by the Pelota Cubana USA account this week.

According to the page Pelota Cubana on Facebook, Colás, at the age of 27 and originally from Santiago de Cuba, arrives in Saltillo after two seasons in Major League Baseball with the Chicago White Sox and a stint in the minor leagues of the Los Angeles Angels during 2025.

In MLB, the player from Santiago achieved an average of .223 in 88 games, with 62 hits, five home runs, and 23 RBIs over two seasons. His best performance came in 2024, when he batted .273 with an on-base percentage of .368, although in limited action.

The White Sox excluded him from the main roster on March 20, 2025 due to a wrist injury and released him permanently on May 25 of that year, thus ending his time in Chicago.

After becoming a free agent, Colás signed with the Los Angeles Angels on May 29, 2025 to play in Double-A, where he wore the jerseys of Birmingham and the Rocket City Trash Pandas. There, he demonstrated offensive power by hitting 15 home runs and 58 RBIs during the season, although he did not achieve a promotion to the majors by the end of the campaign.

Before this agreement with Saltillo, the Cuban player played the 2025-2026 winter season with the Algodoneros de Guasave in the Mexican Pacific League, staying active while he sought a new opportunity in professional baseball.

The Mexican Baseball League 2026 kicked off on April 16. The Saraperos de Saltillo, who have not qualified for the playoffs since 2023, finished last season with a record of 43-49, placing them eighth in the Northern Zone. Therefore, the team's management, led by manager Mendy López in his first full season, is focused on reinforcing the team with talent like that of the Cuban player.

Colás is not the only Cuban in the Saltillo roster for this campaign. Henry Urrutia, the batting champion, has also reported to the team's preseason. In the same league, other players from the Island such as Roenis Elías, with the Tecolotes de Dos Laredos, and Yadiel Hernández are also active in the LMB 2026.

The Mexican Baseball League has established itself as a frequent destination for Cuban players looking to stay on the radar of Major League organizations while regaining their best form. Pelota Cubana USA summarized the challenge ahead for the Santiago player with a straightforward phrase: "A talented player who needs consistency."
