A semi-truck overturned on Monday night in the northbound lanes of Florida's Turnpike in Broward County, and cleanup efforts kept lanes closed throughout the morning on Tuesday, complicating traffic during peak hours.
The accident occurred near exit 49 towards Hollywood Boulevard and Pines Boulevard, in the city of Hollywood, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
A Honda sedan collided with the semi-trailer, causing the truck to hit a guardrail and overturn, coming to a stop just three meters from a nearby body of water.
The truck driver had to be extricated from the vehicle and was treated for an injury to his hand.
The driver of the Honda was cited for reckless driving, according to the Highway Patrol.
Bottles of spray, miscellaneous items, and more than 50 gallons of fuel spilled onto the roadway and the adjacent grassy area.
An aerial video, recorded around 6:15 AM this Tuesday, showed the truck overturned on the embankment next to the road, with its cargo scattered across the grass.
According to reports, the driver of the 18-wheeler apparently made a sharp turn, which caused him to collide with the guardrail, and the truck nearly fell into a nearby lake before coming to a stop next to the water.
Cleaning operations kept two lanes blocked in the northbound direction, as well as access to the Turnpike from Hollywood Boulevard.
Authorities recommended that drivers take U.S. 441 or Interstate 95 as alternate routes while crews continued to remove debris.
A second accident on the same Turnpike heading north, before Interstate 595, was also causing delays with two lanes blocked, worsening the traffic chaos during the morning; the recommended alternate route for that incident was also I-95.
It is not the first time that an accident of this kind has affected this route: in February 2025, a truck with a trailer transporting wine overturned on the Florida Turnpike in Broward, requiring the rescue of the driver trapped in the cab.
A week later, in March 2025, two trucks collided on the Turnpike in Miami-Dade, blocking three lanes for several hours.
Florida's Turnpike is one of the busiest toll highways in the state, with approximately three million vehicles daily, making any accident on its lanes have a significant impact on traffic in South Florida.
