Authorities from the Ministry of the Interior in the municipality of Unión de Reyes, Matanzas, claimed on Wednesday to have solved a burglary that took place in a home in the village of San Antonio de Cabezas in less than a week, and returned most of the stolen goods to community neighbors on Wednesday.
Among the stolen items were an electric drill, a hydraulic pump, several bottles of oil, car tires, and a bicycle of great sentimental value to the affected owner, Ariel García González, as it belonged to his daughter who passed away 17 years ago.
"I am very satisfied with the speed and efficiency that has been achieved, but I am very happy with what has been returned to me. One of the things is my dear one, the belongings of my late daughter," expressed the affected individual.
This type of operation is part of a recurring pattern of institutional propaganda from MININT, which often publicly disseminates the resolutions of cases to project an image of efficiency to the population.
However, the population claims that most complaints are not effectively resolved.
It is not the first time that similar acts of return of goods have been recorded on the island, where authorities stage the restitution of stolen items in front of the community.
The context, however, is concerning: according to recent data, 2,833 verified crimes were recorded in Cuba, an increase of 115% compared to the previous year, reflecting a sustained rise in crime on the island.
In that context, thefts were the most common crime that year, with 1,536 cases, a figure that highlights the magnitude of the problem faced by Cuban citizens in their daily lives.
The situation particularly affects Matanzas, the very province where this case occurred, one of the regions where the rise in crime has caused the greatest alarm among its residents.
