ICE confirmed this Thursday that it will deport Deisy Rivera Ortega, the wife of Staff Sergeant José Serrano, a Puerto Rican military member with 27 years of active service in the United States Army, despite the agency having previously promised to release her.

Rivera Ortega was arrested on April 14 during a routine immigration appointment in El Paso, Texas, where she went as part of an application for the immigration protection program for military spouses that Serrano had submitted in 2025 and which was still awaiting a decision.

On Wednesday, Serrano publicly informed that ICE had promised to release his wife, but hours later the agency retracted and confirmed that it would proceed with the deportation.

The family described the situation as a broken promise and stated that they plan to file a lawsuit to stop the process, presenting a habeas corpus petition in a federal court, according to CBS News

According to her close ones, she has followed immigration rules to the letter throughout the migration process, which makes the agency's decision even more painful.

The case is reminiscent of Annie Ramos, 22 years old and originally from Honduras, another military spouse detained under similar circumstances.

"They let him down and broke their promise despite 27 years of service in the Army of José Serrano," the family denounced to the public.
