A ray of hope emerges amid the drama experienced by the family of Gerardo Fiol, the Cuban inmate who was brutally attacked in prison just eight days before his release.
According to information provided this Friday by his brother, the opposition figure Enrique Piñeiro Azahares, Fiol has begun to show signs of improvement after the surgery he underwent in Bayamo. This morning, the doctors removed the intubation, and the patient is now breathing on his own.
Although his condition remains serious, the medical report indicates that he is stable within the severity. Hours later, Piñeiro Azahares confirmed another significant development: the inmate regained his speech and was allowed to consume liquid foods.
The news of the improvement has been received with relief by family and friends, who have lived in anguish for days following the violent incident that took place in the San Ramón prison in Campechuela. According to the initial report, Fiol was struck on the head with a blunt object by another inmate, causing an epidural hematoma that required emergency surgery.
However, the medical improvement has not quelled the complaints. His brother insists that the attack was not an isolated incident, but rather a reprisal linked to his critical stance against the Cuban regime. In his statements, he asserts that the alleged aggressor is not recognized within the prison and may have been "disappeared," raising suspicions about a possible cover-up.
“This will not end like this,” he warned, while reiterating his intention to demand justice and investigate what happened to the fullest extent.
The case continues to generate outrage, not only due to the brutality of the attack but also because of the circumstances in which it occurred: a prisoner about to regain his freedom who ended up fighting for his life.
As Fiol fights to recover, his family continues to call for awareness around his case, amidst a backdrop characterized by recurring reports of violence and a lack of protections for those deprived of liberty in Cuba.
