The Cuban Yordan Álvarez is having one of the most dominant season starts in recent Major League history. The Cuban player for the Houston Astros leads MLB in five offensive categories simultaneously: batting average (.358), home runs (11), on-base percentage (.465), slugging (.755), and OPS (1.220).
In his most recent game, according to Pelota Cubana, Álvarez went two for four with a double and two runs scored, continuing an offensive rhythm that positions him as the favorite for the American League Most Valuable Player Award.
In addition to leading MLB in those five categories, the player from Las Tunas tops the American League with 26 RBIs in just 27 games played, a figure that reflects his overall impact at the plate.
On April 22, Álvarez hit his eleventh home run of the season against the Cleveland Guardians, simultaneously tying for the league lead in RBIs. At this pace, projections suggest he will exceed 54 home runs by the end of the year, surpassing the Astros' historic record of 47 set by Jeff Bagwell in 2000.
On April 20, Álvarez reached 700 games in MLB leading the league with 10 home runs in 22 games, a milestone accompanied by a career line of .298/.391/.580 and a total of 177 home runs.
The start of 2026 represents a complete comeback after a 2025 season marred by injuries. Álvarez played only 48 games that year due to a fracture in the metacarpal of his right hand and a severe sprain in his left ankle, finishing with a batting average of .273 and just nine home runs. In only 27 games of 2026, he has already surpassed that total.
On April 7, Álvarez and his compatriot Andy Pagés, from the Los Angeles Dodgers, won the Player of the Week award in their respective leagues, marking a milestone for Cuban baseball in Major League Baseball. Álvarez batted .471 with three home runs and eight runs batted in during that week.
He currently plays mainly as a designated hitter, a decision that minimizes the risk of injuries and allows him to focus all his energy at the plate. His advanced metrics rank him first in xwOBA (.596) among qualified MLB batters in 2026.
As Pelota Cubana USA highlighted when summarizing his performance: "Yordan is not just hitting… he is controlling the game from the plate."
The Cuban, who has hit seven home runs by mid-April before even accelerating his pace further, has the rest of a season ahead where each at-bat has become an event for the Houston fans and all followers of Cuban baseball.
